Buyer answer: verify the claim, not just the word natural
Natural-rubber origin is relevant sourcing information, but it does not by itself prove that a finished latex balloon is biodegradable within a fixed time, compostable, microplastic-free, harmless as litter or lower-carbon than every alternative. A finished balloon is a compounded and vulcanized article. Each environmental claim needs a defined sample, method, conditions and result.

What published degradation research can and cannot tell buyers
A peer-reviewed study exposed selected latex balloons to freshwater, saltwater and industrial-compost conditions for 16 weeks. The tested balloons retained their overall shape and did not meaningfully degrade during that period. See the published latex balloon degradation study.
This result does not establish one lifetime for all formulations and environments. It does show why fixed-year and oak-leaf comparisons should not be treated as universal procurement facts. A buyer should evaluate the exact wording, method and sample behind any claim.
Why natural origin and regulatory classification are separate questions
Natural rubber latex comes from a renewable biological source, while a finished balloon has been compounded and cured for use. EU guidance on single-use plastic products states that latex balloons are covered within its balloon scope because polymer-based rubber items are included. What FSC proves—and what it does not

- Do not plan an intentional outdoor release.
- Use weights, frames or enclosed installation methods that keep balloons controlled.
- Include fragments, ribbons, clips, weights and packing materials in the post-event retrieval plan.
- Follow local waste rules; do not advertise composting unless a defined product result and accepted facility route support it.
- Keep the supplier claim, test file, approved wording and order identity together for retailer or regulator review.

Are natural rubber latex balloons biodegradable?
Natural rubber can undergo biological degradation, but a finished balloon is a compounded and vulcanized article. A responsible product claim needs a defined test method, conditions, sample and result; natural origin alone does not establish a universal time or harmless outcome.
Do latex balloons degrade at the same rate as oak leaves?
A universal oak-leaf comparison is not a reliable buyer specification. Formulation and environmental conditions vary, and one published 16-week study found that tested latex balloons did not meaningfully degrade in freshwater, saltwater or industrial compost during that period.
Does FSC certification prove biodegradability or compostability?
No. FSC chain-of-custody is about certified sourcing, traceability and eligible claims. Biodegradability and compostability are separate product-performance claims that require their own methods and evidence.
Should latex balloons be released outdoors?
No intentional balloon release should be treated as environmentally responsible. Event plans should keep balloons controlled, retrieve fragments and accessories, and follow local waste rules after use.
