Private-Label Balloon Barcodes: When Pack or Case Changes Need a New GTIN
Changing a balloon pack from 10 pieces to 20 pieces is not just an artwork edit. If the product uses GS1 identifiers, review the retail-pack identity and its higher packaging levels before approving new printing. Changing only the number of unchanged bags in a standard case is a different decision.
This guide is for private-label balloon buyers coordinating purchasing, packaging and warehouse records. It covers product identification, not product-safety approval or a guarantee that a retailer will accept a listing.
Separate the balloon, sales pack, case and shipment
The individual balloon is not necessarily the item scanned at checkout. A bag containing several balloons may be the retail trade item. A defined case of those bags can be another orderable level. An individual pallet or shipping carton may also need a logistics identifier.
| Level | Balloon-order example | Decision to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Retail pack | One bag containing a defined size, color assortment and piece count | Which product does the customer buy and the retailer scan? |
| Inner pack or case | A fixed number of identical retail bags, or a defined mixed case | Is this a separately identified trade item in the buyer's system? |
| Logistics unit | A particular carton or pallet assembled for shipment | Does the warehouse require a unique logistics label and shipment data? |
GS1 US distinguishes Each, Inner Pack, Case and Mixed Case. Map the actual order to the applicable levels; do not assign the same identity to every layer just because each layer is called a “pack.” The examples above are planning examples, not AIHUA stock configurations.

Which quantity changes need a GTIN review?
The following examples apply the GS1 GTIN Management Standard, sections 2.3 and 2.8. The brand owner should check all applicable rules and destination requirements before assigning identifiers.
| Change | Identity consequence under the cited rule | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Declared retail content changes, such as 10 balloons to 20 | A change to legally required declared net content requires a new retail/base-unit GTIN and new GTINs at existing higher packaging levels. | Update the product record, bag artwork and affected case records together. |
| Unchanged retail bags change from 24 to 36 per defined case | The changed case/higher packaging needs new identification; the unchanged retail item does not change solely because of this case-quantity rule. | Confirm the new case identity and its child quantity before ordering labels. |
| A temporary shipment carton is used | First decide whether it is a trade item or only a logistics unit; do not assume a new retail GTIN. | Ask the receiver which carton or logistics label is required. |
These are selected cases, not a complete GTIN decision tool. Brand, assortment, formulation, dimensions, promotional changes and local requirements can require additional review. Do not infer “no new GTIN” merely because the piece count stayed the same.
GTIN, SKU and SSCC are not interchangeable
A buyer's SKU is an internal inventory reference. A GTIN identifies a trade item. An SSCC identifies an individual logistics unit, such as a particular pallet or carton assembled for transport. GS1 explains the logistics-unit role of SSCC.
Ask your warehouse whether it receives by retail item, case, logistics unit or a combination. A case GTIN alone does not distinguish two otherwise identical physical cases. Conversely, a logistics label does not replace the retail identity. Confirm any advance shipment notice requirements separately; AIHUA does not claim universal retailer or warehouse-system integration.
Keep one before-and-after change sheet
For every proposed revision, send the old and new values together. This prevents a designer, salesperson and warehouse team from each approving a different version.
- Product: size, finish, color or fixed assortment, printing and pieces per sales pack.
- Hierarchy: retail-pack identity, case identity, child items and quantities, plus any required logistics identifier.
- Artwork: exact file name/version, readable digits, barcode position and the final code supplied for production.
- Physical packing: bags per carton, carton dimensions, weight and the actual sealed-pack reference.
- Systems: who updates the retailer listing, purchasing record, packing list and warehouse master data?
- Changeover: first order using the revision, handling of old packaging, approval date and responsible person.
GS1 US's case-creation guide connects a case to its child product and quantity. It also distinguishes placement-only artwork from the final barcode. Do not release a placeholder image to packaging production, and do not reuse a code from another customer's sample.
Who provides the barcode for an AIHUA private-label order?
You provide the barcode and market-specific warning text; AIHUA prepares the packaging layout to your confirmed requirements. Review the actual code and finished pack, not only a screenshot of the design. If the buyer or retailer needs formal barcode verification, specify that requirement before production rather than treating a successful phone scan as a verification report.
Use the first bag-proof checklist for layout approval and the water-balloon packaging guide for the distinction between own-brand and custom packing. Commercial terms and production timing remain in the wholesale order guide.
Can I keep a 10-piece pack's barcode on a new 20-piece pack?
Do not assume so. Under the cited GS1 declared-net-content rule, the changed retail quantity requires new identification. Have the brand owner confirm the affected hierarchy before printing.
Does changing bags per carton always change the retail bag's GTIN?
No. A case-quantity change affects the relevant higher packaging identities under that rule; review the unchanged retail pack separately and check whether any other change applies.
Does a readable barcode prove product compliance?
No. Product identity, barcode print quality, warehouse acceptance and product-safety compliance are separate checks.
Send AIHUA your proposed pack and carton changes, including the information you already have. Keep private codes and customer-specific files in the order discussion, not in public comments.
